Meeting background
Purdue and iNEMI are co-sponsoring a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded university-industry-government Sustainable Electronics Workshop to identify the highest priority collaborative research areas needed to move towards more globally sustainable electronics. The proposed framework for the research identified at the Workshop will be through an NSF Industry/University Collaborative Research Center (I/UCRC), a long-established program at NSF that catalyzes highly leveraged industry-driven research at universities across the United States.
With iNEMI, the electronics industry, and NSF support, Purdue proposes to extend its Sustainable Electronics Research program by joining the currently existing multi-university NSF I/UCRC Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling. The driving force for the Workshop is the 2009 iNEMI Roadmap on Environmentally Conscious Electronics, with its marked transition from the industry’s past re-active approach to international regulation to pro-active leadership in environmental stewardship and sustainable electronic products. The projects under consideration for the proposed Purdue I/UCRC site were identified as research gaps in the 2009 iNEMI Roadmap and iNEMI Research Priorities Report.
The workshop will:
- Feature speakers from industry and academia discussing critical research gaps
- Brainstorm options and priorities
- Establish action groups to address specific issues, based on the outcomes of the meeting
Meeting objectives
- Evaluate opportunities for university-industry-government collaboration on pro-active fundamental research programs on sustainable electronics through the NSF I/UCRC
- Form action groups to define and execute the required collaborative programs
- Identify additional key industry partners needed for successful implementation
- Stimulate funding for necessary research
Who should attend
Middle management and senior executives from industry and government whose responsibilities include:
- ES&H
- Sustainability strategy
- Advanced technology and materials development
- Product strategy and development
- Product design
- Sourcing and supply chain management
Participation by other potential academic partners for the I/UCRC Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling is also highly encouraged.
Benefits of participation
The intent of this meeting is to set the priorities and direction for industry-university-government collaborative research on globally sustainable electronics. Your participation will allow you to help set this agenda for the electronics industry and its supply chain.
