RFID Item-Level Tag Roadmap

Late in 2005, iNEMI ran a successful workshop on RFID to understand the status of deployment and the remaining technology/business gaps.  Much has happened since then on the deployment of RFID at the pallet/box level.  A number of challenges remain, however, for the technology to be effective at the item level.  The ubiquity of RFID at the item level is dependent on the development of a strong supply chain.  Toward that end, an iNEMI team worked for a year to draft an Item-Level Tag (ILT) Roadmap, which attempts to identify the critical technologies and business processes that must be improved in order to drive adoption of RFID at the item level.  A draft of this roadmap went out for industry review in February 2008.  In particular, the iNEMI RFID team is looking for feedback on:
  • Primary barriers (both strategic & tactical) that are limiting adoption
  • Projected future improvements in key technical and business attributes
  • Industry efforts recommended to close gaps and accelerate deployment

Once the roadmap is validated and finalized, the group will consider collaborative efforts that may be undertaken to accelerate deployment of ILT.
