The Unified Equipment Interaction Methodology has been a collaboration between manufacturers and equipment suppliers to validate the feasibility and ease of implementation of the SEMI standards that are being developed as part of the SEMI North America Fab & Equipment Computer and Device Security Task Force (CDS). The project team has evaluated the proposed implementation of the standard (SEMI ballot 6926), provided iterative feedback to the SEMI Task Force and performed proof-of-concept work.

The proposal for this project and standard came about based on two key issues. First, in a factory environment most equipment is secured with local authentication at the equipment. For package assembly most layouts are in the form of links where tools from different suppliers are lined up. This makes it impractical for any operator or technician to remember unique authentication credentials for each tool in the link and most manufacturers adopt standard credentials that are shared across multiple user groups. This leads to minimal control of who can access the equipment interface and what they are authorized to manage.
Second, interaction with the equipment is not captured to provide data that can be harnessed to understand effectiveness of training, checklists, or instructions. The intent of the project was to complement the standards activity by executing a series of reviews and pilots of the standard to ensure what was being codified would be implementable and sustainable in practice.
