iNEMI’s Eco-Design for Circular Electronics Economy is a series of three interactive webinars featuring experts from leading organizations that are doing innovative/beyond-compliance eco-design work. The series, created in conjunction with partners IPC and Fraunhofer IZM, will be an avenue for eco-design leaders to showcase their thought processes, strategies, successes, and failures. The goal is to capture the best and most innovative practices being used today and to highlight the processes these leaders follow to determine where to focus their eco-design efforts. All webinars will be recorded for broader distribution and exposure.

ADVA Optical
Confirmed Speaker:  Klaus Grobe, Director of Global Sustainability

Abstract: Circular economy challenges for telecommunications infrastructure equipment

Klaus will discuss circular economy (CE) aspects of telecommunications infrastructure equipment and identify the most feasible CE loops and business models for this equipment class. This is based on lifecycle analyses (LCA), including the relevant parameters use mode and lifetime. These analyses allow process-based eco-design of future equipment. It also allows the current focus on energy efficiency and carbon emissions, with the differentiation between Greening-of-ICT and Greening-by-ICT. Ultimately, the combined work on CE business models, LCA and related eco-design will lead to an extension of ADVA’s Product-Service Systems offerings.

Biography

Klaus worked more than 20 years in the field of fiber-optic communications and, in 2000, he joined ADVA Optical Networking SE (Meiningen, Germany) where he is the Director of Global Sustainability. He is one of the main authors of Wavelength Division Multiplexing — A Practical Engineering Guide (Hoboken, NJ, USA: Wiley, 2014), and has authored or co-authored more than 150 technical publications. His research interests include sustainability in photonics, with special respect to energy efficiency and aspects of circular economy. He holds 25 patents. Klaus is a member of the IEEE Photonics Society and is currently Chair of the Telecommunications Industry Association Sustainability Working Group. He received Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degrees in electrical engineering from Leibniz University (Hannover, Germany).

Google Nest

Confirmed Speakers:
Katie Morgenroth, Industrial Design Lead and Manager of Google Nest
Adi Narayanan

Abstract
"Earth compatible" — a peek at the Google Nest design team's collaborative approach to designing for circularity.

Biography

Katie Morgenroth is an industrial design lead and manager at Google Nest. In addition to working with her team to create products that are thoughtfully designed and inspired by the home, she’s passionate about accelerating sustainability in tech through creativity and collaboration. She has a BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois and a Masters of Product Design and Development from Northwestern University. She grew up in Chicago, inspired early on by her parents who are still practicing creatives. She's mother to two tiny amazing humans and married to her best friend. She lives in San Mateo, California, and can be found on most weekends near the beach or somewhere in the mountains, soaking up inspiration from nature.
