|As the performance of electronic systems increases at an almost exponential rate, thermal demands are also increasing, testing the limits of available management techniques and technologies. The 2019 Thermal Management chapter focuses on two application areas — electric vehicles (EVs) and flexible/wearable electronics — that are driving development of many of the new thermal management solutions.
The chapter details the new thermal challenges of EVs, highlighting the complex requirements of key components such as power modules, batteries and light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. With respect to flexible/wearable electronic systems, the chapter presents effective thermal management considerations such as the critical issues of deformation, shock, vibration, and usage scenarios.
The Thermal Management chapter also presents the latest developments in thermal interface materials and what technologies are being investigated for future solutions. Hardware assembly, software control, optimal thermal design and materials (as well as the combination of these approaches) are discussed.
