|Several primary considerations distinguish the products covered by the Aerospace & Defense Product Emulator Group (PEG) chapter from other product sectors included in the 2019 iNEMI Roadmap. These considerations include the extremely harsh environments in which these products operate; the level of required security; the desire for reworkability; long duration storage requirements, and the functional lifetime over which the products are expected to perform and be supported. This chapter discusses evolving product requirements, manufacturing infrastructure issues, technological needs, and gaps.
The critical technology needs include the ability to design, manufacture, procure, and test the latest technologies. The products must be able to perform over the temperature, vibration, and humidity ranges associated with military field environments, and to do this for extended periods (e.g. 10 to 30 years), in many cases with components that were not originally designed for these applications. The products must also provide an affordable life cycle cost, driven by technology and manufacturing readiness levels, as well as sustainability considerations.
The chapter also includes a key attributes spreadsheet along with descriptions of market environment and influencers, component attributes, robust packaging requirements and substrate needs. Critical challenges facing the sector in the short term are identified, along with a vision for the technologies needed to meet future product requirements.
